Fri. 31/8.
Move onto
Never Never land today – Mataranka – although we stayed at a caravan park near Bitter
Springs. In early enough to try out the springs (Bitter that is) before lunch.
Great swim – used a noodle to float down the stream & admire the scenery as
we went. The water was about 31 degrees & very clear. Very relaxing & we
went a couple of times. After lunch go to Mataranka & the Roper River.
Stopped at a pretty picnic area on the river & had a stroll along the bank.
Then went on to Mataranka Homestead & the thermal pool. It has changed a
lot in 20 years & has lost its natural feel – the pool is concreted & a
walk way goes all the way around the springs. Although something had to be done
as there were too many people visiting & trampling over everything but it has spoilt it. Graeme
& Mike had a quick dip but we all agreed that Bitter Springs was a lot
better.
Sat. 1/9.
Long day of travelling
today – on to Tennant Creek. Along the way stop at Daly Waters & have a
look at the unique pub. What a sight with stuff pinned to the ceiling &
walls – practically everywhere & from everywhere. In places quite a pretty
drive but at times a bit boring too!Daly Waters Pub.
Sun. 2/9.
Have a quick
trip to the lookout overlooking Tennant Creek – pretty country. Head on south
& stop at Bonney Well for morning cuppa. Next stop the Devil’s Marbles.
What fascinating rock formations! Had a couple of good walks around the
different rocks - all very intriguing. Have lunch & then head further
south. Quick stop at Wycliffe Wells supposedly the UFO capital of Australia but
I think it’s just another gimmick to get people to stop. Stop again at Barrow
Creek & have a look at the Old Telegraph Station – lovely old building
& still in pretty good condition. Carry on then to our overnight stop at Ti
Tree – probably best to forget this one!
