Thur. 6/9.
Trip to the West MacDonnell Ranges today. Unfortunately there were fires out in the far west & we are unable to go into Ormiston Gorge & anywhere west of Glen Helen. We were able to walk down to the gorge at Glen Helen which is on the Finke River but because of the river can’t get into the gorge itself. Pretty spot though & although the campground looked basic would have been a good place to camp. Head back to Alice with stops at the Ochre Pits, Serpentine Gorge & Ellery Creek Big Hole. The Ochre pit was very interesting – here the aborigines took the ochre out of the creek bed – the colours were amazing – yellow, cream, orange, pink & all shades in between. Took the steep climb up to the top of Serpentine Gorge – worth the effort with great views of the gorge & surrounding countryside. Back down to the creek bed to the entrance of the gorge but stopped once again by water so can only see a little way into the gorge. Last stop at Ellery gorge where Mike,Graeme & I go for a quick dip in the very cold water hole.
