Tue. 28/8.
Pack up & start heading out of the park. Have a morning cuppa at Bukbukluk lookout & then drop the caravans & Mikes car at the ranger station at the southern end of the park. We drive into Gunlom Falls along a gravel road with lots of rocks & spoon drains to negotiate. Apparently you could take a caravan along there but I’m very glad we didn’t try it! Very pretty drive thru hills & alongside a creek. The falls were pretty speccy although not much water flowing over them. Graeme, Mike & I go for a very relaxing swim in the coolish pool at the bottom of the falls. On our way back out to the highway we are stopped by a bush fire that is across the road. We retreated about a kilometre & waited for almost an hour before venturing back. We were able to get through ok although the fire was still burning in a few spots. Eventually get back onto the road & take the windy but pretty road through to the Stuart Highway. Get into Katherine a bit late but find a nice camp spot at Shady Lane C.P.

Wed. 29/8.
Very quiet day as Graeme gets his application finished. I do a bit of shopping in Katherine & of course catch up with some of the washing.

Thur. 30/8.
Hurrah Graeme has finished & sent in his application. Hopefully we can get back to being on holiday! Go out to Katherine Gorge & do a walk to the 1st. Gorge lookout. To go further takes a couple of hours & as the weather is still hot the 1st lookout is as far as we can do. Great views though & it would be good to be able to get to see all the other gorges. Maybe next time? In the afternoon go for a trip around town & have a look at the springs & the old river crossing.
